In a significant move aimed at bolstering Kenya's urban infrastructure, the government of Kenya has finalized a crucial agreement with France for the enhancement of the Nairobi Commuter Railway.

The railway network, pivotal in serving Nairobi and its environs, is set to undergo a comprehensive modernization effort, thanks to a substantial financial package.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, also holding the portfolio of Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, made the announcement during a press briefing on Saturday.

The agreement entails a substantial loan amounting to 138.7 million U.S. dollars, facilitating the ambitious undertaking to revamp the metropolitan railway line.

"Delighted to receive H.E. Stéphane Séjourné, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic on his inaugural visit to Africa during his official trip to Kenya. Our bilateral engagements underscore the vital role our partnership plays in fostering economic growth and development for our citizens," remarked Mudavadi, highlighting the significance of international collaboration in Kenya's developmental agenda.

The French government's commitment to bolstering Kenya's infrastructure, particularly in the realms of roads and railways, has been commendable, noted Mudavadi.

The finalized agreement marks a tangible manifestation of this commitment, specifically targeting the enhancement of Nairobi's commuter rail system.

This initiative aligns closely with Kenya's sustainable urban development objectives, aiming to significantly enhance transportation services and mobility within the Nairobi metropolitan area.

Furthermore, Mudavadi revealed additional facets of the collaboration, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of the partnership.

"We agreed to expedite the implementation of the project co-financed by both countries to construct 8 sports complexes, using the Agora Model, in various parts of our country, to enhance sports infrastructure and facilitate co-hosting of AFCON in 2027," he stated.

The agreement signals a significant stride towards modernizing Kenya's urban transportation infrastructure, catering to the burgeoning needs of Nairobi's populace and facilitating the nation's overarching developmental aspirations.

With both Kenya and France committing to the endeavour, the Nairobi Commuter Railway upgrade project is poised to usher in a new era of efficiency and connectivity, setting the stage for enhanced socio-economic development in the region.
