Kenyatta University is reeling in the wake of a tragic road accident that occurred on Monday evening, involving a university bus transporting students on an academic trip to Mombasa that left 11 dead and 21 seriously injured.

The bus collided with a tractor-trailer in Maungu, Taita Taveta County.

Confirming student fatalities, the University through Vice-Chancellor Paul Wainaina expressed their deepest condolences to the bereaved families through a press statement released by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.

"Kenyatta University is deeply saddened by the tragic accident," the statement read.

"On behalf of the University Council and the University Management Board, I wish to convey our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones in this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all."

According to Wainaina, a team comprised of doctors, medical personnel, security officers, and student and staff wellness officers was dispatched from both the Main Campus and Mombasa Campus to the accident scene.

Their primary objectives was to assess the situation, provide assistance to survivors, and gather accurate information.

The team also evaluated the possibility of airlifting some of the injured students to Nairobi, based on the severity of their injuries and by the time of this publication, four of the students were airlifted to Nairobi's Aga Khan Hospital for specialised treatment.
