The United States Embassy in Kenya has cautioned its citizens residing in Nairobi to exercise increased caution following a rise in petty theft incidents within residential areas.

The U.S. Embassy issued a security alert on Friday, March 15th, 2024, highlighting a surge in "crimes of opportunity" such as purse snatching and phone theft.

"There are reports of increased criminal activity in residential areas of Nairobi," the alert stated.

These crimes are often opportunistic, targeting unsuspecting residents who may be walking alone or using their phones in public spaces.

The Kenyan government is taking steps to address the situation. "The government of Kenya is taking measures to place more police in high crime areas," the alert assured.

Maintain situational awareness: Be aware of your surroundings, especially when walking alone or using electronic devices in public.

Keep a low profile: Avoid displaying signs of wealth, such as expensive jewellery or large sums of money. Keep valuables concealed.

De-escalate confrontations: "Do not physically resist any robbery attempt and remain calm," the alert advised. Confrontation can escalate situations and lead to violence.

Vehicle security: When in traffic, ensure car doors are locked and windows remain closed.

By following these simple precautions, residents can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to petty theft. The Nairobi Police Department is also encouraging residents to report any suspicious activity, which can be crucial in assisting law enforcement efforts.
