A rogue police officer found himself at the receiving end of justice after members of the public intervened in a violent robbery incident on February 3, 2024.

Police Constable Edgar Opollo was apprehended by Kisii Central police officers, averting a potentially dire situation.

The events unfolded when a group of citizens intervened as Opollo was being confronted by a furious mob, ensuring his safety until law enforcement arrived.

According to witness accounts, Opollo was found amidst a barrage of blows from enraged bystanders after allegedly robbing a Kisii University student of their smartphone.

Upon investigation, authorities discovered the stolen phone in Opollo's possession. He was promptly arrested and taken into custody by law enforcement officers for further questioning.

Meanwhile, the local Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had been actively pursuing an armed gang responsible for a previous robbery incident.

On January 2, 2024, the gang targeted the PEPS Mini Supermarket, making off with Sh40,000. C

CTV footage captured the perpetrators, three individuals with partially covered faces, two of whom were armed—one with an AK47 and the other with a pistol.

Interestingly, the individual carrying the rifle was attired in police fatigues, though his status as a law enforcement officer was not immediately evident.

Following Opollo's arrest, a thorough identification process was conducted, during which the owner of the supermarket positively identified him as one of the assailants involved in the earlier robbery.

Further investigations have revealed that Opollo is a member of the General Service Unit (GSU) deployed in Kisii.

As he recuperates under police guard at a Kisii hospital, he awaits interrogation and eventual arraignment on charges of robbery with violence.

The arrest of a rogue officer underscores the community's role in upholding law and order, while also highlighting the vigilance required in maintaining trust and integrity within law enforcement agencies.
