President Uhuru Kenyatta’s personal assistant Jomo Gecaga is facing eviction from an apartment in Riverside estate, Nairobi owned by former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero over rent arrears.

This comes as the Kenyatta family seems to have fallen out with Kidero who has been in and out of court several times over corruption related charges.

JSTA Ltd, which is linked to Jomo’s father Udi Gecaga, has sought to bar its eviction from Gem Suites Riverside apartments rented at a cost of Sh540,000.

The firm is seeking the court’s intervention in the row, saying Jomo will be prejudiced and embarrassed once auctioneers arrive to seize his assets and evict him from the said apartment.

Documents presented in court show that Jomo occupies the apartment on 2C Riverside.

“That a temporary injunction do issue restraining the defendant from unlawfully levying distress, harassing, illegally evicting…pending hearing and determination of this application,” says JSTA.

The row was triggered by a notice seeking to pay the halved rent of Sh250, 000 beyond September to December and a push to forgo paying an additional lease fees of Sh950,000.

Udi had made a request to Kidero to extend the offer for paying half rent to December, arguing that cash flow in the family business had weakened in the wake of Covid-19 economic pressures.

However the Kideros, via Geminvest Limited, rejected the application and instead accused the Gecagas of declining to sign a new lease deal after the previous agreement expired in March 2016.

“Geminvest Limited will not accept payment of Sh250,000 only as monthly rent,” the firm indicated in a notice dated September 15 attached in documents fied in court.

“The company requests that you clear current outstanding bill of Sh950,000 for period ending September 30 and then vacate the unit.”

Through an urgent case before Senior Principal Magistrate Agnes Makau, Uhuru’s long-serving PA sought the court’s protection against eviction and seizure of his assets over the accrued rent.

The two parties have been directed to appear in court on Tuesday for a hearing.

According to documents in court, Geminvest extended reliefs to JSTA during the pandemic, including allowing it to pay rent in Kenya shilling and not dollar, slashing rent from Sh500,000 to Sh400,000 in April and Sh250,000 June to September.
