David Mugonyi has been appointed as the new Director General of the Communications Authority of Kenya by ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo.

This decision comes in the wake of the resignation of Ezra Chiloba, who previously held the position.

Owalo confirmed Mugonyi's appointment through an official statement, referencing a letter from the Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, dated 19th December 2023.

The letter, marked with reference number SH/GM/22, conveyed approval for Mugonyi's appointment, stating, "You may now proceed and take appropriate action to formalize the appointment."

Mugonyi, holding a Master's Degree in International Journalism from City University in the United Kingdom, has an extensive educational background.

He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Nairobi and holds a Diploma in Mass Communication from the same institution.

Before assuming the role of Director General, Mugonyi served as the Head of the Presidential Communication Service.

His professional journey includes a significant tenure as the spokesperson and communications secretary for President William Ruto from 2013, during Ruto's term as the Deputy President.

Prior to joining Ruto's communication team, Mugonyi served as the head of the parliamentary press unit.

The vacancy arose when Ezra Chiloba, who had been serving as the Director General since 2021, resigned on October 19, 2023.

Chiloba's departure followed his suspension in September, prompted by an internal audit that implicated him in financial impropriety.

Mugonyi now steps into the role, bringing a wealth of experience and a distinguished background in communication and journalism.

His appointment is poised to shape the future trajectory of the Communications Authority of Kenya under his leadership.
