In a disconcerting turn of events, a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) logistics helicopter crashed in Buna, Wajir North, on Monday, as it carried out relief operations for flood-affected residents.

The incident, captured in harrowing footage circulating online, occurred shortly after takeoff, prompting concerns about the safety of military air operations.

Details regarding the number of individuals on board remain undisclosed, with the KDF providing a concise statement, "The crew and other military personnel onboard were part of an air surveillance squadron intensifying day and night patrols and surveillance for the on-going Operation Amani Boni."

At approximately 1700hrs, the Kenya Air Force multipurpose helicopter, model Mi-171E, crashed in Wajir County.

Miraculously, it was reported that all crew and passengers disembarked safely.

The helicopter had been engaged in relief supply duties in Moyale, Marsabit County, and Buna in Wajir County.

"The cause of the crash will be established after investigations," indicating that a thorough inquiry will be conducted," The KDF stated.

This incident marks the third crash involving a KDF helicopter in less than five months, raising eyebrows among local leaders

In a parallel event on the same day, a Prime Aviation helicopter, registration 5Y-SDL, carrying Arabajahan MCA Abey Jimaale crashed at Wajir Airport's runway during takeoff.

Piloted by Captain Kiroken and Captain James Ndirangu, the aircraft sustained extensive damage, leaving Ndirangu with shoulder and right-hand injuries, Kiroken with head injuries, and Abey with head injuries.

The three were promptly transported to Wajir County Referral Hospital and later referred to Nairobi for further treatment in stable condition.

Police reports confirmed ongoing investigations into the circumstances of the Prime Aviation helicopter accident, which occurred mere hours before the KDF helicopter crash in Buna.

Wajir County Red Cross Coordinator Abdia Manya highlighted that several individuals, including pilots and teachers, sustained injuries in the latter incident and were promptly taken to Buna Sub-county Hospital for medical attention.

The consecutive helicopter incidents have prompted heightened scrutiny into the safety protocols and operational aspects of air travel in Kenya, with citizens and leaders alike calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the causes behind these alarming events.
