Nairobi lawyer Charles Kanjama has moved to Milimani Law Courts challenging signatures availed to electoral body IEBC to support the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum.

Kanjama argues that the process IEBC gave voters to verify their details including accessing files via links was unreasonable and no voter education was done prior to the verification process.

He terms the verification process by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission as mainly inadequate and inaccessible to the general public.

Kanjama wants the court to grant orders to nullify the decision by the poll body that confirmed the verification of the signatures presented in support of the looming BBI referendum.

High Court judge Jairus Ngaah on Wednesday ordered the case be served upon the respondents in the case, including IEBC chaired by Wafula Chebukati and Attorney General Paul Kihara.

The parties to the case are expected to highlight their submissions on the matters raised via video link on March 8.

This comes as the BBI Bill was passed by more than 40 county assemblies by Wednesday, surpassing the legally required 24 and the National Assembly and Senate will adopt it in preparation of a referendum.
