Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi’s official car was Wednesday evening set ablaze by an irate mob after it hit and killed a boda boda rider and his passenger at Ololulunga in Narok County.

The boda boda rider John Saanyo and his son, 8, were killed on the spot by the deputy governor’s car following a collision at a junction at around 6:30pm on the Narok-Bomet road.

It is reported that Maangi, his driver Stanley Gitonga and two of his aides were destined for Nairobi from Kisii when the crash occured, though none of the vehicle occupants were hurt.

Narok South Sub-County Police Commander Chebe Kiambere said Maangi’s Toyota Prado, registration 45CG 028A was heading towards Narok after passing Bomet town.

Kiambere told the media that the car belonging to Kisii County collided with the motorcycle registration number KMEW 733J killing the rider who was carrying son heading home.

Following the accident, irate residents and boda boda riders blocked the busy Bomet-Narok highway for hours before setting the county vehicle ablaze as police tried to retrieve the bodies.

The bodies of the rider and his son have been moved to Narok County and Referral Hospital.

This comes only two days after Maangi and South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro were released from police custody after being arrested for allegedly plotting violence at the burial of veteran Kisii politician Simeon Nyachae in the weekend.

But the deputy governor blamed his woes on his support for Deputy President William Ruto, who has been going round the country donating funds for "hustlers" led by boda boda operators as he seeks to replace President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2022 election.
