In a major announcement made on Tuesday, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen unveiled an ambitious plan that includes the relocation of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) from the railway station.

This move comes as part of a broader strategy aimed at transforming Nairobi into a modern Railway City and marks a significant step forward in the city's development.

Under the visionary plan, the Nairobi Railway City project will see the development of state-of-the-art urban space, with the Nairobi Central Station and the public realm at its core.

The signing of a commercial contract between Kenya Railways and WS Atkins International, as the implementing agency, took place on Tuesday at Transcom House in Nairobi.

This signing ceremony has given impetus to the journey towards realizing the grand vision of Nairobi Railway City.

CS Murkomen expressed his optimism regarding the transformative potential of the project.

"The development of the City will create 10,000 jobs directly and indirectly, regenerate the area around the Nairobi Central Station, provide a clean and green urban space, create a multi-modal transport system, and position Nairobi as a leading World City and commercial hub," Murkomen stated.

With these ambitious goals in sight, the relocation of PSVs from the railway station is seen as a necessary step to pave the way for the construction of the Railway City.

Highlighting the importance of a well-planned and orderly process, CS Murkomen emphasized the collaborative efforts with the Nairobi City County and various stakeholders to ensure a humane and seamless relocation plan.

"In order to pave way for the construction of the City, we will be working with the Nairobi City County and various stakeholders on a relocation plan for Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) currently using the railway station as a bus terminus to ensure the relocation process is as humane and as orderly as possible," he stated.

This relocation plan will not only facilitate the construction of the Nairobi Railway City but also prioritize the needs of commuters and the efficient functioning of public transportation.

It is expected that the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Transport, Nairobi City County, and other stakeholders will ensure a smooth transition and minimize any disruptions caused by the relocation of PSVs.

The Nairobi Railway City project is set to transform the landscape of Nairobi, creating a vibrant urban space, regenerating the area surrounding the Nairobi Central Station, and establishing a modern multi-modal transport system.

Furthermore, the project aims to position Nairobi as a leading World City and a prominent commercial hub, attracting investments and creating numerous employment opportunities for its residents.

As the construction work is scheduled to commence in January 2024, the relocation of PSVs from the railway station signifies a significant milestone in the realization of the Nairobi Railway City vision.

It is an important step towards the city's transformation into a thriving metropolis with improved infrastructure, clean and green urban spaces, and enhanced connectivity.
