The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) has issued a statement through its Secretary-General Diana Marion condemning medical fraud occurring in certain medical facilities in Kenya.

Following the recent NTV expose on fraud in hospitals involving NHIF claims aired on June 18, 2023, KMA said it aims to address this pressing matter that compromises the integrity of medical services and undermines patient trust.

"The Kenya Medical Association strongly condemns any form of medical fraud and is committed to working towards eradicating such practices from our healthcare system," the statement read.

"We believe in upholding the highest standards of medical ethics and professionalism as evidenced by our Code of Conduct, which our members are bound by."

The association upholds the highest standards of medical ethics and professionalism, as evident in its Code of Conduct, to which its members adhere.

KMA emphasizes the need for accountability and the application of appropriate legal consequences for those found guilty of fraudulent activities.

In support of the Ministry of Health's actions, KMA urges the strengthening of regulatory bodies by providing them with sufficient resources to conduct audits, investigations, and inspections to detect and prevent fraud.

"We support the action taken by the Ministry of Health and urge them to strengthen regulatory bodies by providing them with adequate resources to conduct audits, investigations, and inspections which help detect and prevent fraud," KMA said.

The association calls upon the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and NHIF to swiftly investigate reported cases of medical fraud.

Furthermore, KMA urges KMPDC to implement protective measures for whistleblowers who expose fraudulent activities and encourages individuals with knowledge of unethical practices to come forward.

"KMA calls upon the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), and NHIF to take immediate and decisive action to investigate the cases of medical fraud," KMD said.

"We further call upon KMPDC to implement mechanisms to protect whistleblowers who report fraud and encourage individuals with knowledge of unethical practices to come forward."

Recognizing that proper coordination between regulators and professional associations is crucial for safeguarding medical ethics and standards, KMA emphasizes the urgent need for well-defined structures to support self-regulation within the medical profession.

The association is ready to collaborate with KMPDC to actualize effective self-regulation in Kenya.

KMA also appeals to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of medical fraud to the relevant authorities.

The association highlighted patients' and families' vital role in identifying and exposing fraudulent activities, ensuring transparency and trustworthiness within the healthcare system.

Additionally, KMA pledges to intensify efforts in educating and raising awareness among healthcare providers and the public about the consequences of medical fraud.

The association also said it aims to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including the government, professional bodies, and civil society organizations, to strengthen regulatory mechanisms, enhance transparency, and promote ethical practices within the healthcare sector.
