Police recovered a firearm from a suspect who was lynched by an angry mob in Mau-Summit, Nakuru County, on Tuesday night.

The suspect, identified as Antony Cheruiyot, was accused of stealing a number of sheep, which he had enclosed in his homestead.

An angry mob stormed in at around 10 pm and attacked Cheruiyot was allegedly a habitual offender and had a pending court case at the Molo Law Courts for a similar offence.

On April 29, 2023, he was found in possession of 11 stolen sheep and was out on bond.

The recovered firearm was a bereta pistol, which was booked at Mau Summit police station.

In a similar incident, two hours later, one suspect was burnt beyond recognition while his accomplice escaped with life-threatening injuries.

They were attacked by an angry mob for stealing two cows, a few kilometres from the scene of the initial incident.

Police officers from Sirikwa police station arrived at the scene and found the charred remains of the suspect.

However, the stolen livestock was recovered and handed back to the owner. A manhunt for the escaped suspect is currently ongoing.

The police have condemned the actions of the angry mob and urged the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands.
