The family of a 19-year-old high school student is in mourning after their daughter was allegedly killed by a stray bullet from a police gun in Jua Kali area of Kisumu on Tuesday.
Jacinter Achieng, a Form Two student at Rang’ala Girls High School in Siaya County, is said to have been on a motorcycle going shopping for second term items before she met her death.
Achieng is said to have been among four people who were shot and injured by police who opened fire at an irate mob during their operation targeting matatu operators in Kisumu.
According to Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu medical director, Dr Patrick Eshiwani, she was rushed to the facility by Good Samaritans but acceded to her wounds before being treated.
The remaining three, who also sustained injuries during the fracas in the lakeside city, were operated on successfully at various health amenities in Kisumu City and later discharged.

Boda boda rider Kevin Ochieng, who was carrying Achieng at the time of the shooting, was left with a bullet injury on his right arm and was treated at Kisumu County Referral Hospital.
The said bizarre shootings resulting in the student’s death occurred during a violent clash between police and mechanics after the officers pursued a PSV matatu into Jua Kali area.
Kisumu County Police Commander Alphonse Kimanthi has assured of an in-depth investigation into the shootings and those found culpable will face the full force of the law.
