Deputy President Rigacthi Gachagua’s application to have his nickname “Riggy G” trademarked has official been accepted by the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI).

Gachagua had applied to have the name trademarked in November last year at a time the moniker coined by a Kenyan content creator started trending on social media platforms.

The move means the DP will now enjoy the full rights to utilize the name “Riggy G” in all kinds of promotional material as he so wishes after securing the trademark from KIPI.

He will only be stopped in his tracks from using the nickname if someone files an objection that the institute then accepts as valid.

In June 2022, Ivy Chelimo, who was then a law student at Catholic University of East Africa, coined the name while commenting on the deputy presidential debate before it caught on.

Gachagua, in October 2022 after being sworn into office alongside President William Ruto, embraced the name that had become so popular on social media while referring to him.

The DP, during the meeting with Ivy, offered her a job in his Harambee House Annexe office, where she still works up to date.

According to CAP 506, Section 58D, 1 (f), anyone who violates a registered trademark shall be guilty of an offence, and is liable to a fine not exceeding Sh200,000 or to be jailed for a term not exceeding five years or to both.
