The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed that a total of 40 suspects have been arrested in connection with the anti-government protests that took place in Nairobi on Tuesday.

The suspects were taken into custody after engaging in various acts of violence that resulted in the destruction of property worth millions of shillings.

"Following the unlawful protests held yesterday May 2, 2023, a total of 40 suspects were arrested for engaging in acts of violence in different parts of the city.," the DCI said.

According to reports, a passenger service vehicle was set ablaze along Ngong Road, while a truck carrying 29-tonnes of steel cables from Kampala, Uganda, was also destroyed along the Southern By-pass.

One of the suspects arrested along the Southern By-Pass was identified as Kelvin Kavasika, a 23-year-old fugitive wanted for committing various robberies in the city, who was found in possession of a knife at the time of his arrest.

These were just some of the incidents that took place during the illegal demonstrations.

The suspects were arraigned in different courts across the city today and charged with various offenses, including Robbery with Violence, Malicious Damage to Property, and Unlawful Assembly, among others.

The charges are in line with the provisions of the penal code and reflect the severity of the offenses committed.

The DCI has recorded statements from various witnesses and obtained CCTV footage in relation to some of the incidents, which will be presented as evidence against the suspects in court.

"Detectives have also recorded statements from various witnesses and obtained CCTV footage in relation to some of the incidents, which shall be adduced in court, against the suspects," the DCI said.

The DCI has warned members of the public against engaging in acts of violence during illegal demonstrations.

Anyone found engaging in such activities will be dealt with firmly within the law.

As the legal proceedings against the suspects continue, the DCI and other law enforcement agencies remain committed to ensuring that those who engage in acts of violence are held accountable for their actions.
