Nairobi City County has addressed the incident in which a 26-year-old pregnant woman lost her baby at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital raising concerns about the quality of care offered to patients at the hospital.

The county in a statement issued on Monday by its executive member Anastasia Nyalita acknowledged the incident and gave a detailed account of what transpired.

According to the statement, the woman arrived at the hospital on April 15th, complaining of lower abdominal pains and a lack of regular baby movements.

The doctor recommended an ultrasound, which showed that the baby had already died.

The woman later delivered a stillborn male infant, who had passed away 2-3 days before delivery.

“Mama Lucy Kibaki informed the patient and her relatives of the ultrasound results which revealed that the baby was already dead. The Ultra sound scan results came back revealing that the patient had experienced an Intrauterine Foetal Death (IUFD) at 38wks 5days,” the statement read in part.

“At 7:20pm the patient who was already in labor delivered a macerated (shows skin and soft tissue changes- skin discoloration/darkening, redness, peeling and breakdown) still birth male infant with a birth weight of 2,600grams. The medical team showed the patient the baby and informed her that the baby had passed away 2-3 days before delivery and her visit to the hospital.”

Despite the circumstances, the county notes the patient and baby could have been handled better, according to the county.

"Although there have been improvements in patient handling and customer service, the County Government plans to complete stalled building projects, improve staffing levels, and hand over Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital to ease the pressure on Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital," the statement read.

In that regard, Nairobi County has made some changes at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospitals that included the appointment of a new management board and Facility in charge as shown below:
