Plans are underway to construct a modern terminal and new runway at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

This was announced by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday during the inauguration of the new Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Headquarters in Nairobi.

The CS said that as a crucial gateway to Kenya; it is imperative that a Public-Private Partnership model be employed to enable the expansion of JKIA.

According to Murkomen, the expansion should encompass the addition of a new terminal and runway, with the goal of doubling the airport's capacity and elevating its status to that of the world's premier airports.

“Being a key port of entry for Kenya, it is critical that we work on a Public-Private Partnership model that will facilitate the expansion of JKIA to include a new terminal and runway to double the airport’s capacity and move the list of the best airports in the world,” Murkomen said.

Murkomen urged the board to prioritize the expansion & modernization of JKIA to maintain its competitiveness.

He appealed to the newly appointed board to work together with investors and partners during the expansion and modernization endeavor.

“Top of the agenda for the Board will be collaboration with investors and partners in the implementation of Government’s plan to expand infrastructure capacity especially at JKIA and Wilson airports as a way of increasing capacity and making Kenya's aviation sector more competitive,” the CS said.

The CS furthers said the new terminal is expected to create more job opportunities for Kenyans and place Kenya at the top of aviation.
