Kenya’s long-standing and largest salt manufacturing unit, Kensalt, has announced a hike in the price of the vital commodity.

Kensalt announced the price hike, which will take effect on Saturday, in a statement dated March 31, 2023.

According to the notice, Kenasalt said the continuous rise in the cost of production necessitated a price increase.

“We wish to inform you that due to a continuous rise in the cost of production, we have been forced to increase our prices by KES 1,000 per ton plus VAT with effect from 15th April, 2023,” the notice read.

“This price increase was necessary in order to continue supplying you with salt without fail.”

This is the first time in ages that a salt manufacturing company is announcing a price hike for the commodity.

In many quarters, when prices of such commodities hike, it is usually believed that it proves the high cost of living because it is among the cheapest items that are locally manufactured.
