Unknown goons took advantage of the Raila Odinga anti-government demonstrations and raided a two-day-old ultra-modern funeral home at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu.

The goons broke into the Kwee Funeral Home and stole several items worth millions and destroyed property of unknown value.

Computers, furniture and other items were stolen from the facility by the goons.

The goons left a trail of destruction that did not spare a hearse that was parked outside.

Reports say the trouble started when police allegedly shot dead a secondary school student and moved the body to the facility.

The rioters then went to the facility and demanded to view the body of the deceased before they were denied entry to the premises.

“These police officers ran with the body of a student who had been shot dead. When we went we could not find the body and that is why we demanded answers from the facility and things went ugly,” one rioter said.

When the facility decided to deny the rioters entry, it inflamed their rage, and they erupted into violence.

Kisumu County Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o strongly condemned the attack on the funeral home.

He faulted the police for their failure to protect the facility from the criminals who were masquerading as protestors and urged the police to bring the culprits to book.

“Why did the police fail to protect the facility from the gang which also carted away computers and other valuable equipment? The police must hunt and arrest the criminals,” Nyong’o said.

Another group of goons was reported to have earlier raided Jamia Supermarket situated along Nyerere Road in Kisumu.

According to the supermarket owner, identified as Hussein Hassan, the goons also vandalised the supermarket and looted items.

Hassan claimed to have lost about Sh13 million in damages.
