The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed that it is now in the second phase of its investigation into the mysterious death of 23-year-old Geoffrey Mwathi.
Mwathi was captured on CCTV falling down 10 floors to his death from an apartment house rented out to mugithi artist Lawrence Njuguna aliasDJ Fatxo at Kasarani area of Nairobi under an unclear episode.
In a series of posts on social media, DCI said its sleuths will grill several persons of interest then make necessary proposals to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
DCI says the initial phase of the probe saw detectives conduct a forensic examination of the scene, interrogate witnesses, and retrieve CCTV footage capturing Mwathi’s final moments.
“The DCI Homicide detectives investigating the death of Geoffrey Mwathi Ngugi aka Jeff that occurred on February 22, 2023 has concluded its 1st phase of the investigation the first cluster of witnesses in the case, forensic examination of the scene and retrieval of CCTV footages that captured the deceased's last moments,” said DCI on Twitter.

It added, “Several other DCI Forensic experts assisting the Homicide investigators have also collected crucial evidence and the same are being analyzed.”
The DCI, which is facing public pressure to conclude the investigation and deliver justice to Mwathi’s family, has called for patience as they conclude their investigation into the death.
“We are in the meantime requesting the public to be patient as we endeavor to establish the circumstances surrounding Jeff’s untimely death,” appealed the directorate.
The February 22 incident occurred after Mwathi, an interior designer, went out on a night of fun in various clubs with DJ Fatxo, his cousin, three women and two other unidentified men.
The CCTV at Redwood Apartments near USIU Africa captured the DJ, Mwathi and three women return to the house at 3am followed by the DJ’s cousin who came in a different car.
Fatxo is then captured exiting the house accompanied by the three women at 4am leaving the interior designer with the other two unidentified men before CCTV captures his fall.
In a press conference last week, DJ Fatxo had pleaded his innocence claiming he had even reached out to Mwathi's family over his sudden demise saying he also wanted to establish what transpired and asked his fans to pray for him during this period.
Members of the Kenyan public, especially on social media, have been piling pressure on the DCI to fast track the investigation and accusing the police of dragging their feet on the case.
