Business in Migori County came to a standstill after a section of the county's residents held demonstrations against the Kenyan government.

The protestors barricaded roads with boulders that made it impossible to pass, as they protested the high cost of living, which they asked the government to address.

This comes shortly after Azimio, La Umoja One Kenya Coalition leader Raila Odinga declared the onset of a countrywide mass action that will culminate in a major mass protest on March 20, 2023.

"We are out of the streets to call for the high cost of living and inflation to be tackled," one protestor said.

The irate protestors walked through the streets wielding twigs, empty sufurias, cooking sticks and also displayed placards expressing their grievances.

They pitched camp at the Migori Bridge and blocked the busy highway that connects Kenya and neighbouring Tanzania, and motorists had to find alternative routes to continue to their destinations.

The protestors also said they wanted the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to open their servers for scrutiny.

The demonstrations in Migori come ahead of the three-day Lake Region Economic Block (LREB) summit the county will host.

According to county boss Ochilo Ayacko and LREB chief executive officer Victor Nyagaya who met recently, they expect a good turnout to the summit that will bring together all the counties within Nyanza, Western and parts of The Rift Valley Regions.
