Police in Kiambu County have arrested a 50-year-old clergyman in connection with the mysterious death of a 35-year-old female member of his church who went missing last month.

The woman whose identity has been revealed as Christine Makena Maingi was last seen on CCTV footage in the suspect's company, identified as Christopher Kiptum Keter, on February 6, 2023, before her decomposing body was discovered in a residential building in Ruiru on February 8, 2023.

Detectives recovered drugs at the crime scene, which suggested Christine may have committed suicide by drug overdose.

However, the postmortem report revealed Christine’s neck had marks and signs that were consistent with strangulation and therefore ruling out the possibility of an overdose.

Police tracked Keter to a hideout at the Mukuru Kwa Njenga informal settlement in Embakasi, Nairobi County on Tuesday, from where he has been playing the hide-and-seek game with the authorities since February 8, 2023.

A police report says Keter was a regular visitor at Christine’s home where she lives with her parents, who had travelled upcountry at the time of the incident.

The two met earlier in the year while on a journey to the capital city and would meet often for prayer sessions.

Keter is currently in police custody, awaiting to be arraigned on Thursday for murder.

Christine will be buried on February 18, 2023 at her parent’s home in Meru County.
