Former Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) Director General Francis Wangusi has died at the Nairobi Hospital at the age of 64.

Wangusi’s family says he passed away on Wednesday afternoon at the city hospital, where he had been was undergoing treatment for an unknown ailment.

The former CA boss is reported to have been fighting the illness for a while before he breathed his last while being monitored in Nairobi Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Wangusi landed the CA Director-General job on August 21, 2012 for a period of three years and his appointment was later renewed in 2015 for a further period of four years.

The CA board in 2018 sent the space scientist on compulsory leave to allow for a probe into his alleged involvement in malpractices during training and promotion of employees.

In an interview with a local publication at his Tuuti home in Kanduyi, Bungoma County, Wangusi had confirmed vacating office to end the leadership tussle at the State agency.

He then threatened to sue the CA board for claiming he was still in office even as the Employment and Labour Relations Court suspended the recruitment of his replacement in a case filed by the Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK).

He survived many attempts to evict him from CA and his official residence in Lavington after falling out with his then boss, ICT CS Joe Mucheru, over his handling of a case against Airtel.

CA has mourned Francis Wamukota Wangusi saying he oversaw significant transformation at the state agency during his tenure before he rrtired in 2019.

"Mr. Wangusi oversaw significant milestones in the ICT industry, including the transition to digital television broadcasting and the sector's exponential growth during his tenure from 2012 until his retirement on 22nd August 2019. May his soul find rest in perfect peace ????????️"

Wangusi is well remembered for his unwavering push for digital migration at a time it was opposed by top media houses led by Citizen TV, NTV and KTN bosses, who asked for more time to comply.
