Law Society of Kenya (LSK's) has given Public Service Commission (PSC) seven days to tackle issues arising from the creation of the Office of the Spouse to the Prime Cabinet Secretary.

In a letter, LSK President Eric Theuri has demanded that PSC, whose chairperson is Ambassador Anthony Mwaniki Muchiri, addresses three critical legal concerns.

Theuri wants the commission to avail information on the legal framework for the creation of the office, the financial implications and what it will cost the taxpayer to run the said office.

“PSC should provide the legal framework that guides the establishment of the office within the next seven days,” said Theuri.

He said the legal body will have no option but to proceed to court to challenge the controversial creation of the office if the information demanded is not availed in seven days.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on February 24, 2023 oversaw the official launch of the Office of the Spouse to the Prime Cabinet Secretary, in this case, Tessie Mudavadi.

A statement by Mudavadi’s Director of Communication Salim Swaleh said the new office will complement work being done by First Lady Rachel Ruto and Second Lady Dorcas Gachagua.

“The office will complement work being done by the Office of the First Lady and the Office of the Spouse to the Deputy President,” read the statement from Mudavadi’s office.

“I believe the days when the spouses of political leaders only appear in ceremonies and say or do nothing are gone. Their contribution in our family set-up should be mirrored to the larger society for they learn so much from our daily leadership engagements,” said Prime CS Mudavadi during the launch.

Mudavadi revealed that was going to champion the Ushiriki Wema Initiative to address gaps in the differently abled people in society.
