Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu has accepted a bid by a faction of Jubilee Party to suspend Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, Vice Chairman David Murathe and Treasurer Kagwe Gichohi.

The faction of former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party convened a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Nakuru on Friday and resolved to suspend and replace Kioni, Murathe and Gichohi.

According to Nderitu, the NEC held in Nakuru was procedurally constituted based on the party’s constitution paving way for EALA MP Kanini Kega to replace Kioni at the helm of Uhuru’s party.

The Registrar of Political Parties was responding to a letter dated February 10 notifying her of the NEC resolutions by the Kega faction seeking to take over the leadership of the former ruling party.

She addressed the response to Jubilee Party Deputy Secretary-General Joshua Kutuny.

“The office has taken notice of the content of your submissions and the resolutions. It is also noted that the meeting was properly convened as per the party constitution,” said Anne Nderitu.

According to the Jubilee Party constitution, it is only the chairperson who has the mandate to convene and chair meetings by the NEC, management committee and National Advisory Committee.

The splinter group selected Kega, Eldas MP Eldas Keynan and his Kitui South colleague Rachel Nyamai as acting secretary-general, vice chairman and national treasurer, respectively.

The group also installed nominated MP Sabina Chege, Bahati MP Irene Njoki, nominated Senator Margaret Kamar and Nyamira Woman Rep Jerusha Momanyi as new members of the party NEC.

The registrar directed the Kega-led faction of Jubilee Party to instigate internal dispute resolution mechanism to formally execute the complete suspension of embattled Kioni, Murathe and Gichohi.

“It is expected that the party shall update the office on the progress of the internal dispute resolution and disciplinary processes,” Nderitu said.

She added, “You are further required to adhere to the provisions of the party constitution as you undertake the said processes.”

The Kega axis, backed by 30 MPs who recently met President William Ruto, had resolved to exit the former ruling party from the Azimio la Umoja coalition party even Kioni insists the party remains firmly in the Raila Odinga team.

On this matter, the registrar has advised Jubilee to observe the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition agreement that put a 90-day demand after the August 2022 poll for a party to exit.

This comes days after former President Uhuru Kenyatta publicly reaffirmed his support for Raila and his Azimio endeavours during a rally in Luanda, Siaya County after attending the burial of former Education CS Prof George Magoha.
