Four people have lost their lives following a suspected Al-Shabaab attack after the vehicle they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Hailey, Bura East Sub-County, Garissa County.

The four victims of the terrorist attack were Kenya National Highways Authority officials who were leading a convoy of other vehicles whose occupants narrowly escaped the attack.

The KeNHA officials were engineers who were on a routine assessment of the Old LAPSSET road.

Garissa County Commissioner, Boaz Cherutich confirmed the incident and said they had already deployed a team of police officers to pursue the terrorists.

Cherutich appealed for calm among locals and assured them the culprits will be brought to book.

“We want to appeal to the local people around that area to be calm as we pursue the criminals. The government will continue with the sustained operation to flush them out,” Cherutich said.

“We also want to assure the public that we will arrest them to face the law and bring calm back in the area.”

Cherutich noted more details of the incident would be availed once the families of the victims are notified.

KeNHA expressed its condolences to the bereft and pledged to support them as they grieve their losses.

“The KeNHA Board, Management, and Staff condole with the bereaved families and stands with them in prayer wishing them the Almighty's strength during this difficult period,” KeNHA said.
