Security officers attached to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s wife Dorcas Gachagua physically assaulted a Daily Nation journalist Mwangi Muiruri.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning in Gatanga, Murang’a County during a relief food distribution exercise.

The whole commotion was triggered by Muiruri trying to record the event with his mobile handset when an officer pulled him back despite having a clearly labelled job tag.

The journalist tried to reason with the officers, saying that recording the event on his phone was part of his job, but his argument made little sense to the irate officers who manhandled him before seizing the mobile phone from him.

In a video that has since gone viral across social media, the officers are seen roughing up Muiruri, who is a Nation Media Murang’a correspondent.

One officer is seen launching a scathing attack on Muiruri and landing a hot slap across the helpless journalist’s face before his fellow officers intervened and restrained him from further assault.

Another vigilant officer noticed Muiriri’s colleague had recorded the whole incident on another mobile phone and promptly grabbed the phone from the reporter and deleted the video clip probably to make the evidence of the sad incident disappear before returning the phone.

However, it seems the officer forgot that technology is currently advanced and that there are reliable data recovery solutions one of which was used to recover the footage.
