The controversial police officer named Ahmed Rashid who was caught on a viral video executing two suspected gangsters at 4th Street, Eastleigh 1st Avenue in broad daylight is now facing murder charges.
Rashid is scheduled to take a plea on December 8, 2022, after the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) got summoning orders from Milimani High Court requiring the officer to appear in court.
IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori in a statement said IPOA concluded the probe into the killings that took place on March 31, 2017, and established police action occasioned them.
"The Independent Policing Oversight Authority concluded the investigation into the deaths of Mr. Jamal Mohamed and Mr. Mohamed Dahir Kheri following a shooting which occurred at Eastleigh, Nairobi County on March 31, 2017 and established that the fatalities were occasioned by police action," Makori said.
"Guided by Section 29(a) of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority Act, the findings were forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions with the recommendation to charge the Corporal Ahmed Rashid, with murder."
Makori further said IPOA has gathered sufficient evidence to charge Rashid with the murder of the suspects.
Rashid led a squad which became popular as the ‘Pangani Six’ which operated in Eastleigh, Pangani, Mathare slums and their environs.
However, this news has been received with mixed reactions among Kenyans, with a section welcoming the idea of his prosecution.
The other section, largely made up of residents in the affected areas lauded Rashid for bringing sanity and security to those areas which they said had become open fields for criminals to conduct their activities.
Here are some of the comments some Kenyans shared on social media:
The issue of court wanting ahmed rashid to be charged with muder is totally unacceptable. Ahmed Rashid brought sanity in Pangani, Mlango kubwa and Eastleigh areas charging him is promoting insecurity and giving gangs unwanted confidence, this is a terribly bad move. pic.twitter.com/LhMuQ2ec1i— Garissa Finest???? Hallo Anne & Team. That was a great Job well done. No one should die in the hands of the same people meant to protect us from the criminals or mob justice. There is a reason why we are human beings & not animals, even when some of us act like animals.— Goodman (@WambuiBMW) November 24, 2022
