A five-storey building that was evacuated in the weekend in Ruiru Town, Kiambu County collapsed hours after more than 100 tenants were evacuated.

The building came tumbling down hours after the tenants were helped to move their belongings from their houses after the pillars developed cracks on Sunday afternoon.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi led the Sunday evacuation process assisted by firefighters from Kiambu County.

The county boss said he responded to the distress after his office received reports from the National Construction Authority (NCA) on the danger posed by the building to its tenants.

“Tenants can no longer stay in this house because its columns - which are supposed to support it have cracked. It cannot stand for long,” said Wamatangi during the evacuation.

He added” If not for the neighbouring house that is supporting it, it could already be down.”

The Ruiru rental apartment is the second building to collapse in Kiambu County in a week after another five-storey rental building collapsed in Ruaka leaving two tenants dead.
