Police in Juja, Kiambu County have intensified the crackdown on counterfeit alcohol.

This comes after the police conducted raids in six locations within two months of the operation with the latest raid being on Tuesday at a private residence in Kenyatta Road Estate.

The raid was led by the Juja OCPD Phylis Muthoni and during the raid, an assortment of counterfeit alcohol brands was being packaged and passed as genuine products.

According to the Juja Deputy County Commissioner Charles Muriithi, illicit drinks valued at over Sh800,000 were impounded.

Police also recovered the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) stickers, an alcoholometer and several branded boxes bearing logos of various companies.

At least five other raids on illegal distilleries set up in private residences in Juja Sub-county have been carried out over the past two months.

This has raised concerns by genuine liquor distillers who say the counterfeits pose a substantial risk to consumers and the distillers threaten the very existence of their businesses.

Juja residents also expressed their fear of the rapid increase in the number of illegal distilleries in the area.
