Police were forced to lob tear gas to disperse a section of MPs allied to the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition and their supporters while they were on a march to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) headquarters at the Anniversary Towers.

The police blocked the MPs and their supporters from accessing the IEBC headquarters where they were going to protest the interdiction of Ruth Kulundu, the commission’s deputy CEO.

Security agencies at the premises had directed the MPs to drop their supporters before they could be allowed to have an audience with officials of the commission.

However, things quickly escalated into a fracas that with some MPs being caught in the middle, forcing the police to act swiftly.

Led by Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang’, the protesters accused the commission of victimising Kulundu for refusing to comply with her bosses after the hotly contested August 9, 2022, presidential election.

Kajwang’ said IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati and the commission’s CEO Marjan Hussein’s conduct reflect the IEBC’s disregard for law and its lack of independence.

"The conduct of the two individuals, Wafula Chebukati and Marjan Hussein portray an institution that has surrendered its independence and disregarded the rule of law," Kajwang’ said.

The legislators were yet to access the premises by the time of this publication.
