The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has elected Macharia Njeru as Vice-chairperson of JSC.

Njeru will deputise Chief Justice Martha Koome who is the chairperson of JSC, after he was elected on September 21, 2022.

JSC made the announcement about Njeru’s appointment on Thursday via a statement shared on JSC's social media accounts.

Njeru takes over from Olive Mugenda who served in that capacity albeit temporarily.

"Hon. Commissioner Macharia Njeru, who represents the Law Society of Kenya in the Commission has been elected Vice Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission. He succeeds Hon. Commissioner Prof. Olive Mugenda, MBS, who served as interim Vice Chairperson," JSC said.

Njeru joined the Commission on May 13, 2019, having been elected by members of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) pursuant to Article 171 (2) (f) of the Constitution.

He is the Chairperson of the JSC’s committee steering the development of the Commission’s Strategic Plan 2020-2025. He is also a member of the Audit, Governance and Risk Management Committee. 

Previously, Njeru served as Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). 

He was a member of the National Task Force on Police Reforms (Ransley Taskforce) which developed the program for police reforms in Kenya.

Njeru also sat in the Police Reforms Implementation Committee (PRIC) where he led the drafting of policing-related legislation. 

The commissioner also served as a chairperson of FINA Bank Rwanda (now GT Bank Ltd.) and previously served as a Director in FINA Bank Uganda, and FINA Bank Kenya.

Njeru has held positions on various boards and served as a Board Member Kenya Airports Authority and chair of the Board of Finance, Anglican Church of Kenya, Nairobi Diocese. 

He is the founding Managing Partner of Macharia-Mwangi & Njeru Advocates and has practised law for the past 27 years.
