The United States Department of State's Bureau of African Affairs has lauded former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s appointment as a peace envoy to the Hon of Africa and the Great Lakes Region.

The bureau, through a statement issued via Twitter, acknowledged Uhuru will continue to play a vital role in pushing for negotiations and peaceful resolution to current or possible conflicts in Northern Ethiopia and in Eastern DRCs.

"We welcome the appointment of Uhuru Kenyatta as peace envoy for the conflict in Northern Ethiopia and in Eastern DRC. A critical time for both conflicts - his work will be crucial," the statement read.

During President Uhuru’s tenure as the head of state, he actively took part in peace talks in South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

President William Ruto on Tuesday, during his inauguration, said he had requested Uhuru to be Kenya’s peace envoy while commending him for steering the peace initiatives in the region.
