Angolan opposition party National Union for the Total Independence of Angola  has filed a complaint with the country's National Electoral Commission over the August 24, 2022 election results.

UNITA party National Secretary Faustine Mumbika confirmed the complaint was filed on Thursday.

"The complaint about the final results was filed with the (national electoral commission) today," Mumbika said.

The Angolan election results that were declared on Monday declared the long-ruling Movement of thhe Liberation of Angola (MPLA) the winner with 51.17 per cent of the total votes against UNITA's 43.95 per cent.

This means Angolan President Joao Lourenco will serve another term as the leader of the nation.

However, UNITA said it does not recognize the election results from the National Election Commission alleging discrepancies in the vote counting.

UNITA leader and presidential candidate, Adalberto Costa Junior called for an international panel to review the count.

According to Angolan Constitutional Court spokesperson Artur Torres said that after the commission reaches a decision, the complainant can appeal before the court.
