Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Nassir of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) under the Azimio la Umoja coalition has bagged the Mombasa Governor seat.

Provisional results from the rescheduled election indicated that Abdulswamad trounced his main rival Omar of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the hotly contested Mombasa poll.

Tallied provisional results from the six constituencies in Mombasa County indicated that Abdulswamad emerged victorious with 119,083 votes against Omar's 98,108 votes.

Once officially declared winner, Abdulswamad is set to be inaugurated to take over from his ODM counterpart Ali Hassan Joho to become the second Governor of Mombasa County.

Among those who have led in congratulating the ODM MP for the victory is former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who had thrown his weight behind Omar, the UDA candidate.

The election was an extension of the fierce political fight between Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his UDA colleague William Ruto, who was declared President-Elect by IEBC, a move which has been challenged by Raila at the Supreme Court.
