Police are holding a 27-year-old suspect in Nyando, Kisumu County in connection with the murder of his mother after he allegedly set her ablaze in her house in an unclear circumstance.

The victim, according to the police report is the Deputy Principal Migingo Girls Secondary School Roselyn Nyawanda.

The charred remains of Nyawanda were discovered on Sunday night in her bathroom burnt beyond recognition in the house within the school compound in Migingo Village.

Police officers arrived at the scene of the crime and recovered a lantern which they believe the suspect drew kerosene, which he used to burn his mother from.

A kitchen knife that was also recovered beside the body also informed the preliminary investigations that the suspect may have stabbed his mother first with a knife before setting her ablaze.

It was Nyawanda’s other son who discovered their mother’s body in the bathroom when he paid his mother a courtesy call at around 8 pm.

Sources intimated the suspect is of unsound mental health and is a drug addict whose presence at home is always characterised by the mayhem he often raises.

The suspect is currently in police custody as the police conduct further investigations into the matter.
