Scores of people are feared trapped under the debris of a four-storey building that collapsed at Infinity Area in Mwiki Estate, Kasarani, Nairobi.

According to Saint John Ambulance who first shared a report about the unfortunate accident, the incident happened on Wednesday evening.

Sources privy to the incident said renovations, which included the digging of a trench that is suspected to have weakened the building’s foundation could have caused the collapse of the building.

"The owner was carrying out renovations including digging a trench which weakened the building's foundation forcing it to collapse trapping several people," a witness said.

St John Ambulance deployed their team to the scene of the incident and together with other humanitarian and government agencies, launched a rescue mission.

“Some residents of the collapsed building in Kasarani area are feared still trapped under the rubble. A team of rescuers from various humanitarian and government agencies on site saving lives,” St John Ambulance said.

The number of persons trapped under the debris is yet to be established, but rescue operations are still underway.
