A Nairobi court has sentenced the former director of a children’s home to a hundred years in prison for defiling four minors who were under his care.

The director who was accused of defiling four children was found guilty of all four counts.

Senior Principal Magistrate Zainab Abdul while giving her ruling said the offences the former director of Screams Africa children's home in Mihango, Utawala, Stephen Nzuki committed were grave and carry a hefty penalty and it was the court's responsibility to set an example out of Nzuki.

"There is no doubt offences committed are very serious and carry a heavy penalty. It is, therefore, the responsibility of this court to impose a deterrent sentence to other would-be offenders," Zainab said.

According to Zainab, Nzuki should have protected the minors, but he defiled them repeatedly instead.

Nzuki pleaded for clemency from the court and preferred a non-custodial sentence.

However, the court denied Nzuki’s request, saying handing a non-custodial sentence in such a case was akin to the mockery of the country’s justice system.

While sentencing Nzuki, the court considered the damage Nzuki caused the then minors over six years ago.

Nzuki will serve 50 years in prison for defiling a 9-year-old minor, 20 years for defiling another 15-year-old minor and another 20 years for defiling a 13-year-old minor.

He will also serve 10 years for performing an indecent act with a minor.

The former director committed the offences between 2010 and 2016 and 12 prosecution witnesses testified in the case.
