Qatar has announced that there will be no sale of alcoholic drinks inside the stadia during the FIFA World Cup it will be hosting.

This is according to a source that is privy to the planning of the events.

"At stadiums, the plans are still being finalised, but the current discussion is to allow fans to have beer upon arrival and when leaving stadium, but beer won't be served during the match or inside the stadium bowl," the source said.

This will force fans attending the World Cup events to remain sober, for the entire time matches will be played or drink before entering the stadia.

Qatar has stringent rules on alcohol and does not allow public indulgence at all. However, in this instance, it will allow fans to purchase and partake in alcohol during restricted times and at particular venues in Doha.

"Unlike previous World Cup fan zones, beer won't be served all day long, but at restricted times," the source added.

Furthermore, football fans flying to Qatar have been prohibited from buying duty-free alcohol at the airport and going with them through customs.

Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy spokesperson said they will announce plans on the availability of alcoholic drinks during the World Cup events in due course.

The spokesperson also said in alcohol is available in designated areas in Qatar such as hotels and bars but in order to cater for the visiting football fans, alcohol will be availed in additional designated areas.

"Alcohol is already available in designated areas in Qatar, such as hotels and bars, and this will not change in 2022. With the aim of catering to visiting fans in 2022, alcohol will be available in additional designated areas during the tournament," the spokesperson said.

Visiting football fans will be able to purchase alcoholic drinks at the few licensed establishments such as hotels and clubs at Sh2,128 per pint of beer.

However, the price of beer inside the fan zones and regions close to the stadia is yet to be set.
