Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has stepped down from her Kitui County re-election bid in favour of her chief opponent Julius Malombe.

The Narc Party leaders stepped down on Wednesday during an Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition rally in Kitui.

Azimio’s presidential candidate Raila Odinga said Ngilu will assume other roles in their government if they win the August election.

Ngilu will support Wiper Party’s Julius Malombe who will square it out at the ballot with former Kitui Senator David Musila of Jubilee Party and former Deputy Nairobi Governor Jonathan Mueke of the UDA party.

Raila asked the residents of Kitui to choose a candidate between Malombe and Musila as he had other plans for Ngilu in Nairobi.

"Whoever you elect whether it is Malombe or Musila, it will be you to decide because we want to send Ngilu to Nairobi," Raila said.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) issued a fresh clearance certificate to Malombe on Monday after the High Court nullified his nomination and cancelled his nomination certificate.

The certificate was cancelled on grounds that the Wiper party contravened the Political Parties Act and its own nomination rules in handing Malombe the nomination certificate.

The immediate former Kenyan ambassador to Uganda Kiema Kilonzo moved to court to challenge Malombe’s nomination.

Justice Christine Meoli cancelled his nomination certificate and ruled that it was unlawfully issued to Malombe.

Meoli also ordered the Wiper party to conduct fresh nominations within 72 hours.

Following the ruling, the nomination was held on Sunday and Malombe emerged the winner garnering 9,826 votes against Kiema’s 80.
