United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) Secretary General, Dr Mukhisa Kituyi, has officially announced that he will run for president in the 2022 General Election.

He made the declaration on Saturday and joins the crowded field of presidential hopefuls that includes Deputy President William Ruto, ODM’s Raila Odinga and ANC’s Musalia Mudavadi.

Dr Kituyi has indicated that he is ready to face political bigwigs for a chance to serve Kenyans, address their key issues and grow the economy due to his vast international experience.

“It is no longer a secret. I will be going for the presidency in 2022. Nobody should tell us who to support. We need a President who will save this country and Kenyans from a bad economy,” he said in Bungoma town.

Dr Kituyi, whose term at the helm of UNCTAD ends mid this year, was Trade and Industry Minister during Mwai Kibaki’s presidency and is a former Member of Parliament for Kimilili.

He was appointed the 7th UNCTAD secretary-general on September 1, 2013 and then re-appointed for four more years in July 2017.

Dr Kituyi studied political science and international relations at the University of Nairobi and at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, according to information on the UNCTAD website.

He said he would go around the country to seek support for his presidential bid and also form a presidential campaign team.
