Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja is facing controversy as new details emerged over the academic papers he presented to the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Sakaja has on several occasions indicated that he was an Actuarial Science graduate from the University of Nairobi and that he graduated before he vied for Senator in the 2017 poll.

IEBC on June 7 certified Sakaja to vie for Nairobi governor after he presented a degree from Team University in Uganda amid reports he did not have a University Degree, a mandatory requirement for all gubernatorial candidates.

However, the University of Nairobi told Nation that he was yet to graduate from the university after undertaking an Actuarial Science programme from 2003 until 2007/2008.

“It is true Sakaja was admitted to the university and was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, studied from first year up to fourth year, but is yet to graduate,” said UoN communications director John Orindi in an interview with Nation reporters.

Based on the new revelations we have compiled six key questions being raised about the university degree Sakaja presented to IEBC based on his past utterances and movements:

1. If Sakaja graduated from Team University in Uganda with a Bachelor of Science in Management on October 21, 2016, why did he present only his transcripts from UoN to IEBC for clearance to vie for Senator if he had a degree from Team University?

2. If he graduated from Team University in 2016, how come, during an interview with Daniel Ndambuki on Churchill Show published on Youtube on June 31, 2021, he does not mention it and only confirms that he was a UoN Actuarial Science graduate?

3. In yet another interview with Kenyan high-flying rapper Nyashinski, which was published on Nyashinski’s Youtube page on September 22, 2020, Sakaja confirmed that he acquired all his education exclusively in Kenya. Why has his story changed?

4. If he graduated from Team University in 2016, how come his name is missing from the graduation booklet under Bachelor of Science in Management graduands’ list, which only has six names?

5. If, indeed, he graduated from Uganda’s Team University, how come data from the Immigration Department capture him travelling to Uganda only once (October 19, 2014) during his entire supposed period of study (2012-2016)?

6. How come he has never mentioned graduating from Team University in any of his numerous interviews and no single record exists about it until when he presented his academic credentials to IEBC on June 7, the final day for clearing candidates?

In a response to a letter from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, UoN had indicated that Sakaja’s university transcripts were incomplete and had not been officially signed.

However, the former TNA party chairman who is aspiring to be the next governor of Nairobi, has told off those questioning his academic credentials terming the claims “propaganda.”

"Next they will say that I wasn't born. Forget propaganda; sell your candidate. Our march is unstoppable, our faith is unshakeable and our victory is inevitable," he said after being cleared by IEBC to run for governor in the August 9 general election.

Sakaja is vying on the ticket of Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA party ticket and picked former Absa Bank Chief Operating Officer James Njoroge Muchiri as his running mate.

Dennis Gakuu Wahome has filed a complaint with the IEBC Dispute Resolutions Committee to have Sakaja barred from contesting for the governor seat for failure to “meet the constitutional and statutory requirements to have a degree.”

In another petition, Alex Musalia is challenging his clearance saying he failed to meet legal requirements, questioning how he got his degree abroad while he was a full-time MP and circumstances under which he was accredited shortly before submitting his papers to IEBC.
