Motorists plying Mombasa Road using the newly built Nairobi Expressway experienced a massive traffic jam on Tuesday evening.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), through its Twitter account, explained that an accident involving a truck near the Gateway Mall caused the heavy traffic jam.
“Motorist along Mombasa Road are advised of a Traffic Snarl up near Gate way Mall. The Traffic Snarl up was caused by a truck that rammed on the Express Way barricade. The truck has since being cleared,” KeNHA said.

According to witnesses who were caught in the jam, the situation was further aggravated by bottlenecks along the road at various exits.
Vehicles piled up in the Expressway from the Mlolongo exit stretching all the way to the Syokimau exit.
Much to the surprise of many motorists, the traffic on the lower road was flowing better than traffic on the Expressway.
The Nairobi Expressway was constructed to ease the traffic congestion along the busy Mombasa Road and has been opened for a trial period before the official launch.
Some motorists have also reported delays at the Expressway payment points caused by slow services with the test period meant to allow the operators to work on glitches.
Transport CS James Macharia opened the Nairobi Expressway to the public on May 14, 2022 and motorists are fast embracing it to save on time and fuel.
