Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka are engaged in talks that could pave the way to their reunion before May 30, 2022.


This comes after details have emerged that Kalonzo’s Wiper party did not move to court as it had earlier intended to disengage from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

Despite having declared his presidential bid and even named his running mate for the August election, the talks could culminate in Kalonzo making a U-turn back to the Azimio fold.

This can be seen in the reduction of incessant attacks leaders allied to the Wiper leader have been launching at Raila and the Azimio Coalition, which is believed to have been a direction from high-ranking party officials.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr. said all is not lost as there is a 12 day window period to May 30 for negotiations.

This gives Raila and Kalonzo a grace period to iron out whatever issues there might be before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) publishes the final list of party nominees before the clearance.

“All is not lost. There is that window between now and May 30. They are still negotiating,” Mutula said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, KANU leader Gideon Moi and Raila are in the process of convincing Kalonzo to accept Martha Karua as Azimio’s running mate and accept the Chief Minister’s position.


On Monday, while unveiling Karua as his running mate, Raila also announced that Kalonzo would become the Chief Minister in his government if Azimio wins the August election.

However, Kalonzo and his wiper brigade insist the Azimio Coalition agreement must be amended to capture the Chief Minister’s position otherwise it would remain to be nothing but ‘hot air’.

“What our leader is being promised is hot air. It is not captured anywhere. How can we trust that?” Mutula said.

According to Matungulu MP Stephen Mule, Kalonzo and Raila agreed to continue holding discussions about working together in a future that is not specified.

“As far as we are concerned, they agreed to discuss any future engagement and after two weeks, they agreed to compare notes. That is what my leader said,” Mule said.

“What he said is exactly what he told us. That they will still continue engaging.”


Other members such as Borabu MP Ben Momanyi have also indicated that Kalonzo is yet to disengage from Azimio Coalition and assured that an amicable resolution will be reached regardless of everything happening.
