The Government has declared Friday, April 29, 2022 a National holiday in respect of the passing of retired President Mwai Kibaki.

According to the Government, Kibaki will be accorded a state funeral on the same day at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, which will include full military honours and protocols.

The Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has said that the body of President Kibaki will lie in state at the Parliament from Monday till Wednesday.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta will lead Kenya in the public viewing of the remains of President Kibaki on from Monday at 10:00 am.

Matiang’i also said that all other dignitaries and Government officials are expected to arrive at the Parliament building by 9:00 am before members of the public may view the body of the late President Kibaki.

“All other dignitaries and Government officials are required to have arrived at the National Assembly for the event on or before 9.00 a.m. Thereafter, the public will be allowed to view the body and to pay their last respects,” Matiang’i said.

As for the dignitaries and members of the diplomatic corps who would wish to condole with the family of Kibaki, they are requested to visit his presidential office in Nyari Estate on Tuesday and Wednesday between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm.

The Government has requested members of the public who wish to sign the condolence book within Nairobi to present themselves at Harambee House on Tuesday at 9:00 pm.

Matiang’i also said the Government will avail condolence books at all Regional County and Sub-county headquarters for member of the public who wish to sign the same.

“Condolence books will be availed at all Regional, County, and Sub-County offices for the members of the public,” Matiang’i said.

Kibaki will be laid to rest on Saturday at his home in Othaya, Nyeri County.
