Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura was on Monday sworn in as acting Governor of Nairobi taking over following the impeachment of Mike Sonko. 

After his swearing in, Mutura promised Nairobians that he would deliver services, restore sanity to the management of the City County and end the county budget stalemate caused by Sonko.

"You have elected me to various positions in the city and I have never failed you. This will not be the first time," said Mutura.

Mutura was sworn in on Monday after the ceremony was postponed on Friday after Justice Jairus Ngaah, who was assigned to swear him in, arrived at the venue past the legally stipulated time.

On taking over, Mutura signed the county budget warrants paving way for the release of Sh37.5 billion budget that had been on hold since October after then governor Sonko resufed to sign it due to his war with Nairobi Metropolitan Services boss Mohammed Badi.

The senate confirmed Sonko’s impeachment by city MCAs on Thursday and the Speaker will be the acting Governor for 60 days before a poll is conducted as Nairobi has no deputy governor. 

Sonko vowed to challenge his removal in court given the ouster might bar him from ever holding any public office in the country spelling a death knell to his hitherto fast rising political star. 

His ouster was sealed after Senators found him guilty of four of the 11 charges brought against him by MCAs, including gross misconduct, abuse of office and violation of the constitution.

According to Chapter 6 of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity, a State officer who has been kicked out of office for abuse of office is barred from holding any public office.
