The Nairobi Metropolitan Services has said it will restrict matatus from operating within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) by the beginning of April.

According to NMS, the restriction will be followed by the full operation of the Green Park, Park Road and Desai bus termini.

The move is aimed at decongesting Nairobi CBD that has been expected for a long time.

NMS transport and Public Works Director Engineer Michael Ochieng’ said matatus plying the Langata, Ngong and Argwings Kodhek Roads will be the first to face the restriction.

Ochieng’ said the kinds changes NMS are making have been implemented in other parts of the world and Kenya has to follow the example.

“The change we are making in terms of traffic to decongesting Nairobi has been done in other parts of the world and it must be done in Kenya too,” Ochieng’ said.

Ochieng’ also said Kenya must lead among the East African countries in showing how capable it is to manage their public transport.

“We must take the lead in East Africa to show that we are able to manage their public transport,” Ochieng’ added.
