"My behaviour at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally," Smith wrote.
Smith also apologised to the Academy, producers of the show, attendees and everyone who watched the incident.
He also expressed his regret that his actions soiled what would have been a delightful journey to his family and his acquired King Richard family.
"I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us," he said.
Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about Jada's baldness, which was caused by a medical condition called Alopecia.
