Garissa Township Member of Parliament Aden Duale led other MPs allied to the Deputy President William Ruto in storming out of the Judiciary and Legal Amendment Committee (JLAC) meeting on Tuesday.

The JLAC meeting was called to harmonise at least seventeen proposals suggested to the Political Parties Bill, 2021 ahead of the special sitting scheduled on Wednesday.

Other MPs who joined Duale included Kimani Ichung'wa, Alice Wahome and Didmus Barasa.

Duale demanded the exclusion of the Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu from the meeting.

The four legislators dubbed the JLAC session ‘kangaroo’ before walking out.

Legislators who supported the process accused the Duale-led team of sabotaging the Political Parties laws amendment process.

The National Assembly Deputy Speaker Moses Cheboi postponed the debate of the Bill last week to provide JLAC with occasion to harmonise all proposed amendments before the Bill is brought back to the entire House for onward action.

However, the Majority Leader in Parliament Amos Kimunya requested for a special sitting for legislators to vote on the contentious Bill.

The Speaker for the National Assembly Justin Muturi convened a special meeting on Wednesday following Kimunya’s request.

The debate of the Bill which seeks to allow registration of political parties among other matters was adjourned prematurely last Wednesday after it emerged that there were amendments to the legislation that needed to be harmonized with the original draft.
