A Man in Garissa County will now serve 20 years in jail for defiling a 15 year old girl who was walking to a camp to seek refuge after being displaced by floods.

The suspect Yusuf Imani is said to have offered the minor a ride to the camp on a motorcycle but sped off into a bush where he defiled her.

The Court was also informed that after the incident, Imani forced the victim to wash off the mess using dirty floodwater.

The matter was prosecuted by Magistrate Victor Owuor.

This comes as the government made a valiant decision to end Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) by 2026.

When making the announcement, the government promised to intensify its campaign to end these violations by undertaking a series of 12 bold commitments that would remove the systemic barriers that allow SGBV to thrive.

The government promised to develop an SGBV management and information system by 2022 to strengthen SGBV prevention and response programming.

It also promised to establish an SGBV survivors fund through a co-financing model in partnership with private sector, civil society, and other stakeholders for economic empowerment of SGBV survivors.

The government had rolled out the “Komesha Dhulma” campaign in all the 47 Counties to educate members of the public on the need to stop sexual and gender-based violence.
